the boston bruins.

In 2016 I was brought in as the Director of Sports Performance and Rehab as part of a greater vision to improve athlete care and resources.

My responsibility was to keep our team healthy, and advance the exercise and rehabilitation departments.

This involved coordinating medical care, providing forward-thinking treatments, and developing preventative protocols.

Recently, I made the difficult decision to step away from this role and return to a more balanced lifestyle in Maine.

While I still provide treatment and exercise support to athletes privately, I am excited to make this care accessible to the larger population.

Please reach out if you would like to receive high level services like your favorite athletes.

As we age, the things we do off the ice become more and more important. Paul's treatments and guidance were a big help to me staying healthy and prolonging my career. You're in good hands.

Hi, I'm paul WHISSEL.

I am a doctor of physical therapy. I help restore physical health by correcting movement faults that lead to pain and injury.

To me, approaching anatomy and all its nuances is an art form. My guiding principle is to identify the root cause of pain in the body, which allows for profound healing responses.

Over the years, I have been entrusted to care for a wide range of clients. Regardless of age and ability, they possess two common traits; a positive attitude and a dedication to bettering their health.

If you are focused on getting your body on track, I would love to hear from you. I welcome all cases to be discussed, especially those of complex and chronic nature.

A great therapist and friend, you won't find someone more passionate about helping fix people. I found Paul after having multiple spinal surgeries, and he was instrumental in my return to pro golf. I learned a ton, and still use what he taught me today.

Having Paul manage my offseason care and training has been invaluable. His knowledge and skillset are one of a kind. We clean up lingering issues from the season and I get a detailed evaluation that guides my summer program. It’s both reassuring and motivating to know that the work I’m putting in is exactly what my body needs. I enter the season feeling prepared, and I know it will extend my playing career.

My experience with Paul was fantastic. When I began seeing him, I was nursing several injuries from tennis and bootcamp exercise. We addressed these problems and he got me started on an exercise path that was a much better fit for my body and goals. It was great to have my PT in charge of my training, so I was getting stronger without the fear of getting hurt.

faq

Question

Do I need a referral or script from a physician to see you?

Answer

No, in states I am licensed (Maine,

New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio and Florida) you have

direct access to physical therapy.

This means you can schedule your own care without seeing a physician first.

Question

Do you take insurance?

Answer

No, I do not contract with insurance companies, including Medicare.

Removing time limitations imposed by traditional health care models changes everything. It gives me the opportunity to evaluate more thoroughly and hone in on the root cause of symptoms. It also offers flexibility to treat the body in an integrated manner, where involvement of areas beyond the site of pain can be considered and addressed.

This is a true whole body approach that elicits lasting change.

Question

Will my insurance reimburse me for our visits?

Answer

This depends on the type of coverage you have. You should check with your insurance company to review your

out-of-network benefits.

Additionally, some plans require you to obtain physician referral in order to

receive reimbursement.

Question

What is a discovery call? How long does it last?

Answer

A discovery call is a brief, 20-minute conversation that gives us both an opportunity to gather information.

I'm able to learn more about the pain or issue you're dealing with, attempts you've made to resolve it, and activities you are hoping to resume.

You're able to ask questions about your condition, my process, or anything else I can help clarify.

After, we decide if we're a good fit

to work together. There is no

obligation to schedule services.

Question

Do I have to be an athlete for you to see me?

Answer

No. Many of my clients are people that have neglected their bodies in pursuit of career, sacrificed self-care for family, or received poor management of an injury that has led to years of compounding pain and frustration.

I am passionate about helping

these individuals reclaim

their physical health.

Question

Do you have a specialty?

Answer

Yes, I specialize in treating hip and low back pain. I completed the

Hip Preservation Certification through Hospital of Special Surgery (HSS) Rehabilitation and have extensive experience in this area, especially with high-level athletes.

Question

What conditions do you treat?

Answer

While my specialty is treating hip and low back pain, I often get asked to see other complex and lingering issues.

This includes neck, shoulder, elbow, abdominal, knee, ankle, and foot conditions, along with headaches and post-concussive syndrome.

Question

What ARE YOUR CREDENTIALS?

Answer

I earned a doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) and became a board-certified specialist in Sports PT.

I am also a certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP) and Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).

I have completed additional training in several areas, including movement assessment, dry needling, spinal manipulation therapy, advanced soft tissue techniques, blood flow restriction rehabilitation, post-concussion syndrome rehabilitation, and managing athlete training loads.

Question

What EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE?

Answer

From 2016-2022 I served as Director of Sports Performance and Rehab for the Boston Bruins. That role involved oversight of the physical therapy, exercise, and nutrition staffs, and providing hands-on care to the team- both at home and on the road.

Prior to that, I founded a boutique physical therapy, exercise, and Pilates studio called Prescribed Motion in my hometown of Buffalo, New York. I also served as physical therapist for Charlotte Ballet during their summer residence at Chautauqua Institute from 2013-2015.

Before earning my doctorate, I spent a few years working in the strength and conditioning field. First with the Buffalo Bills, then with well-known coaches Mike Boyle at Boston University Hockey and Todd Wright at University of Texas Basketball.
